The Magic Mountain

Opening reception: Saturday August 6, from 6 to 8 pm

NOMA GALLERY is pleased to present the exhibition The Magic Mountain, a collaborative project of Piero Passacantando and Gareth Spor. The collaboration consists of paintings made by Piero and multimedia interpretations of these paintings by Gareth.

Piero:

These works are the outcome of my research in the methodologies and meanings of Thangka painting in Kathmandu, Nepal. For their production, I formed the Piero Passacantando Studio with professional Thangka painters Sherab Tamang, Dawa Tamang of Dharmadhatu Foundation (an NGO devoted to social justice in Nepal) and my wife Clarissa Bynum. They are not a direct translation of Thangka, but rather a reinterpretation of some of its elements,
particularly geometry and color.

Gareth:

For my contribution, I have taken the forms of Piero’s paintings and translated them into other media: film, video and audio. These translations were accomplished using custom software of my own creation. I am interested in how new technologies allow artists to work as modern day alchemists, translating physical objects into virtual representations that can be sculpted at will before re-entering the physical world in another form.
